The New Nikon Z6 III Soars to the Top of the Sales Charts in Japan

The Nikon Z6 III launched last month to significant popularity, taking the top spot on Japanese photography retailer Map Camera’s sales rankings for July.

As spotted by Digicame-Info, the Z6 III is one of three Nikon cameras in Map Camera’s top five, joining the Zf and Z8 in the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.

Fujifilm’s lone entry is the X-T50 in second, although it is a very safe bet that if there were X100VI bodies to sell, it would have easily cracked the top 10. Third place belongs to Sony’s affordable a7C II body, while the company’s costlier high res a7R V and all-around a7 IV bodies take seventh and eighth, respectively.

Canon earned the sixth spot with its EOS R6 Mark II body, while Panasonic took the final spots with the new full-frame Lumix S9 in ninth and the new Micro Four Thirds flagship GH7 in 10th.

“This summer has been marked by an unusually hot summer, and a fierce battle is unfolding in the new product rankings, with new products appearing one after another,” writes Map Camera in a blog post, which has been machine translated.

“The much-anticipated mode, the Nikon Z6 III, released on July 12th, debuted in first place with an overwhelming lead over the second place model and below,” Map Camera continues. The retailer notes that “an enormous number of orders were placed as soon as pre-orders began” on June 19th, two days after Nikon announced the new camera.

Map Camera also notes that while the Z6 III’s sales put it far ahead of the X-T50 in second place, Fujifilm’s X Series camera, which is very good, was itself significantly ahead of the a7C II in third.

Map Camera also publishes monthly used camera sales rankings, and the Sony a7 III took the top spot there, followed by the Nikon Zfc, Sony a7C II, Ricoh GR III, Nikon Zf, Sony a7 IV, Nikon Z6 II, Nikon Z6, Fujifilm X-E4, and finally, the Fujifilm X-T5.

It will be fascinating to see if the Z6 III can maintain its top spot for the August sales rankings. It will also be interesting to see how Canon’s new R5 Mark II performs since it is a relatively expensive camera. Then again, the Nikon Z8 and Sony a7R V cracked the top 10 for July, and they’re pricey models, too.
