VSCO Acquires Rylo for Its Innovative Mobile Video Editing Tools
Photo and video editing brand VSCO has acquired action camera maker Rylo. The pairing, which might seem strange at first blush, promises to bring Rylo’s innovative mobile video editing tools to the VSCO platform starting “next year.”
According to VSCO co-founder and CEO Joel Flory, VSCO has seen a 2x increase in video editing on its platform over the past year. And while Rylo was first and foremost known for its compact 360° action camera by the same name, reviewers of the Rylo were most impressed by its automated video editing and stabilization capabilities.
“We know demand for video editing is only growing across the industry and it is no different on VSCO,” writes Flory on the company’s blog. “This acquisition not only enables us to further accelerate the delivery of innovative video editing features for our community, but reinforces how important video will be for VSCO’s growth and future.”
“Over the past several months the Rylo team has been exclusively working on mobile video editing tools,” he continues. “Building high-end video editing capability on mobile is no small feat and we believe our combined technology and focus on video will help pave new innovation for video editing tools. We can’t wait to make these new tools available to the VSCO community next year.”
Terms of the acquisition—i.e. how much VSCO paid to acquire Rylo—were not disclosed.
While this is exciting for VSCO users and those who want more robust mobile video editing apps—AKA people disappointed with Adobe Rush—the news does mean that Rylo is officially out of the hardware game.
According to a statement by Rylo co-founders Alex Karpenko and Chris Cunningham, the Rylo camera will continue to be available at Best Buy while supplies last; as for the app, Rylo for iOS, Android, and macOS will remain available for download until January 31, 2021 and “continue to work beyond that date,” so that current customers aren’t left high and dry.
