If you’ve been looking for a way to download, organize, edit, and share your photos and videos on the go without having to use a laptop, GNARBOX is a new product you should look into. It’s a new mobile solution that aims to replace your bulky laptop by putting everything you need inside a small, durable device and a smartphone app.

The goal in designing the device was to pack the power of a 15-inch laptop into a device that looks like a small external hard drive. Inside the GNARBOX is a quad-core CPU, an 8-core GPU, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of flash storage, 6-8 hours of battery life, and 300Mb/s Wi-Fi. The shell of the GNARBOX is an IP67 enclosure that’s dustproof, sandproof, shockproof, temperature-resistant, and waterproof down to 1 meter.

Those are some technical specs, but it’s the way GNARBOX works that has a lot of photographers and videographers excited. To use it, you simply plug your cameras or memory cards into the device (via USB3, SD, or microSD), connect your phone to the GNARBOX hotspot, and open up the GNARBOX app.

Your photos and videos will be downloaded to GNARBOX, and you can organize the files, edit them in full resolution, and share them — all within the app on your phone. This helps you cut down on what you need to carry into the field, since it serves the functions of both an external hard drive and a laptop.

Here’s a short video showing how you can use the device to download and edit 4K video from a GoPro:

“We combined the capabilities of a robust processor with the mobility and intuitiveness of a smartphone, so you can manage your footage with less gear,” GNARBOX says. “Now you can truly explore more and carry less.”

Up to 4 phones can connect to the hotspot at one time, allowing you to easily swap photos and videos with others on a trip.

It seems that many people are excited about this new product. GNARBOX is currently raising funds and taking pre-orders through Kickstarter, where the device has already blown past its $100,000 goal in a matter of days.

The retail price of the GNARBOX will be $249 when it hits store shelves, but backers can try to snag one with a contribution of $199 on Kickstarter. If everything goes according to plan, the first units will be shipping out in March 2016.
