Rumor: Canon to Use Sony-Made Multi-Layer Sensors in Two Upcoming Pro-Grade Cameras

There’s no doubt on the rumor mill that Canon is planning to release several cameras in 2015, including some that might be quite revolutionary, but there is some doubt about who will be making the sensors in those cameras.

According to Canon Watch, a ‘very good source’ tells them that two multi-layer sensor Canon cameras coming out in Q1 of 2015 will sport, not Canon sensors, but Sony sensors.

This comes from one of CW‘s best sources, and seems to track with a statement made in a recent interview with DPReview, in which Canon responded to a question about the non-Canon sensor in the G7 X by saying:

We select the best sensor, whoever the manufacturer is. That’s our policy.

The Canon G7 X is said to sport a non-Canon sensor, possibly manufactured by Sony.

Still, doubts surfaced almost immediately after the initial report went live. Canon Rumors and Northlight Images are reporting that they have received emails disputing the claim.

Regardless of what sensors are found in some of Canon’s compact cameras, they will continue to use Canon designed and manufacturers sensors in their pro level DSLRs, “for the foreseeable future.”

We won’t know for sure until Canon officially announces the upcoming cameras, and even then they probably won’t come right out and say whether or not the sensors are Sony-made, but what do you think of this rumor? Let us know in the comments down below.
