Rotor: A Concept Camera That Uses a Stack of Mode Dials

If for some reason you hate both buttons and touchscreens, then Rotor is a camera for you. It’s a concept camera designed by Charlie Nghiem that bases its entire user interface around a stack of physical mode dials. Rotate any of the dials, and the corresponding settings appear on the screen.

The concept is good, but i wonder how it is to use it with gloves ;-)

I think is ineffective. A joystick would do a better job: up an down to browse the functions and left and right to change them.

I’d buy one in a heartbeat.

The dials would be better with wider spacing and/or tactile separation and differentiation between the dials. What consistently amazes me with modern camera UI’s is designers seem to have forgotten the notion that a well designed camera should be usable by a blind man. Being able to index a control, move through the steps via detents, and get the device properly setup before it ever approaches your eye is really helpful when you’re photographing under less than ideal circumstances.

Absolutely useless choice of dial functions, as most of them would be more appropriate as buttons. Way to showcase your idea!

I can see something similar working quite well, maybe with smaller Canon DSLR type dials?

    Just like with a touchscreen.
