This year has been a year of extremes in the Netherlands. We had an extremely cold winter with all of the country frozen, including the Amsterdam canals which almost never happens. I took the chance to document the extreme cold of the Netherlands earlier this year. Now, what followed was an extremely hot spring that has now transitioned into summer.
Last week was extremely cold in my country, the Netherlands. February 28th was the coldest 28th of February in history, breaking the record set in 1904. It’s crazy to experience this kind of weather here while some of my friends in Norway and Iceland are having warmer weather.
When photographers think of my country they think of windmills, Amsterdam, and tulips. These are generally the most photographed subjects in the Netherlands. What they don’t know is that my country turns purple in August.
Over the years I’ve done a lot of travelling, but I always came back to my home country, the Netherlands. Being completely flat, having no mountains, no rocks, no skyscrapers, no good weather (usually), no super dark skies at night because of light pollution, I always feel a bit down when I come back from "spectacular" countries.
But that always goes away quickly. There’s a lot to appreciate in the Netherlands. Things that may be normal for us locals have incredible beauty for outsiders. This is the case in each and every country. This is my home in 20 photos, all taken within 1 year.
