Reviewer Consensus

Good

The Nikon Nikkor Z 24-105mm f/4-7.1 is a compact, lightweight, and budget-friendly travel lens that offers a versatile zoom range and capable macro performance. While it delivers sharp images and quick autofocus, its utility is limited by a slow maximum aperture at the telephoto end and a build quality that relies heavily on plastic components.

What the Reviewers Say

All 9 expert reviews, weighted into the PixelMeter score.

  • PetaPixel 8/10

It is a starter lens in the truest sense, but to its credit, it will deliver excellent photos that you can be proud of, and it may even stay in your camera bag longer than you think, even if the lens itself does not exactly shout prestige.

Nikon's small and very light Z 24-105mm f4-7.1 offers good to very good optical properties and covers a versatile range from wide angle to moderate telephoto with its 4.4x zoom.

  • OpticalLimits 6/10

At just 350g, it almost qualifies as a featherweight. And Nikon still incorporated some weather sealing. If you are running on a moderate budget the Nikon Z 24-105mm f/4-7.1 is actually a reasonable offer.

It is supposed to be a low-cost, small and lightweight lens that allows people to take an all-in-one lens on holiday, and to afford new users and those on a budget access to a wide range of focal lengths in a convenient format. And it does that very well.

  • Christopher Frost

It has a few other image quality problems and its rather dark maximum aperture means that this really is best considered to be a decent quality kit lens to get you started with your camera, but to be moved on from when you can afford something a bit better and a bit brighter.

  • Z System User

The Z-mount version is a better macro lens than the 105mm f/2.8G, and returns more to Nikon’s original close-up “snap” than that most recent F-mount lens. Even outside of macro the lens performs quite well.

Auto-focusing proved to be very quick and very quiet on the Z8 camera that we tested it with, making it ideal for both stills and video, and the configurable control ring and weather-resistance are great features to have at this price-point.

I feel that the Nikon Z 24-105mm f/4-7.1 is a neat travel buddy to take along for the journey. It’s compact, lightweight, and delivers sufficient zoom range to cover a wealth of shooting scenarios, from tourist attractions to sweeping landscapes in the great outdoors.

This inexpensive, cheap-feeling lens makes great pictures, and it's so small and light you'll want to take it everywhere. I prefer it over any 24-70mm lens because of its far more useful zoom range.
