Strong
Google Pixel 9a is a well-rounded midrange smartphone that excels at daily tasks, photography, and battery longevity; that said, it relies on dated materials like Gorilla Glass 3 and features noticeably thick display bezels. While it lacks the premium hardware of higher-end flagships, it remains a top-tier value for users who prioritize core software experience and long-term support.

- PetaPixel 6.5/10
At the same time, it’s becoming clearer that Google doesn’t expect people to get the Pixel 9a because of the camera. Those who just want something good and dependable will be fine with this, whereas those expecting more from the camera will want more.
-
I’d certainly say that this is one of the best mid-range phones out there at the moment, and I’d probably recommend it to most, with some caveats.
- The Verge 8/10
The A-series Pixels have been very good over the past few years. And in the Pixel 9A, Google has taken a good midrange phone and made it great.
-
The Pixel 9a shows Google knows how to make a cut-price flagship phone at a mid-range price better than any other. The combination of top-tier chip, long battery life, great screen and a class-leading camera beats phones costing a lot more.
- Android Authority 10/10
It might look streamlined and understated, but the Pixel 9a is Google at its very best. It packs the right mix of features and flexibility with a simplified design that no longer picks up dust on its way in or out of your pocket.
-
The Pixel 9a gets all the basics right with some Google flourishes and a design that helps differentiate it.

The Pixel 9a is a great phone that does nearly everything right. It offers a great design, now distinct from the flagship Pixel 9 collection, with improvements to an already solid camera offering, boosted performance and the longest battery life of any Pixel I’ve used to date.

Google’s struck a basic but incredibly sensible balance with the Pixel 9a.
-
The Google Pixel 9a delivers flagship-level performance, terrific camera quality, and long-term software support, making it the best midrange Android phone you can buy.
-
The Google Pixel 9a is a solid Android phone that punches far above its weight in important ways, even if the new direction for A-series phone design is a letdown.
-
The AI features alone of the Pixel 9a help distinguish it over many of its rivals, including the iPhone 16e.
-
The 9a's camera quality can hang with flagships twice its price and it has more than enough performance for all but the most demanding gamers or multitaskers.
- Digital Trends 9/10
“The Google Pixel 9a's flat design is a surprising win, while the long battery life, great software, capable cameras, and brilliant fundamentals make it a highly recommended purchase.”
- CNET 8.8/10
If you’re looking for a phone for $500 or less, I don’t think you’ll find a better one than the Pixel 9A [...]
- Android Police 9/10
The Pixel 9a will not be the smartphone for everyone, but it's likely all the smartphone you need right now.

The Pixel 9a really feels like your classic no-nonsense, core Pixel experience wrapped up in a wallet-friendly package.

The Google Pixel 9a is pretty strange this year, and it’s hard for me to recommend.

In keeping with tradition, the Pixel 9a offers the core Pixel experience, including a computational camera and various tools, AI and otherwise, on a budget.
- The Telegraph 9/10
The Google Pixel 9a may just be the best smartphone for most people, or at least for those who are unwilling or unable to pay the going rate for a modern flagship.
-
The Pixel 9a is not a perfect phone, but for $499, it’s hard to argue with it. This device has the same great version of Android seen on Google’s more expensive phones, along with a generous seven years of guaranteed updates.
-
The performance of the Pixel 9a is why you’d buy it: it’s good value for money, offering a solid experience, with a good display and great camera performance.
-
This is, like I said, it's just a likable phone.
- SlashGear 8/10
The Pixel 9a checks in at a solid midrange price point — $499. It can be purchased at Google's Play store and in the Google Store on Amazon.
-
So after spending some time with the Google Pixel 9a and comparing it to the Pixel 9, I am honestly convinced this is the no-brainer Pixel to buy in 2025.
-
By adding more power, a larger screen, a bigger battery, and an upgraded camera—all while keeping it just as affordable—the Pixel 9a is the best smartphone for budget-conscious buyers. I'd take it in a heartbeat over any under-$500 rival.
- How-To Geek 8/10
With near-flagship performance and a sub-$500 price, the Pixel 9a might be the best-value Android phone in 2025.
-
[T]his is the device for you.
-
The Pixel 9a may have been delayed coming out of the gate, but it remains one of the best deals in the business.
-
There are a lot of features on the Pixel, including AI tools, but what makes the 9a shine as the mid-range phone to beat is that it nails the fundamentals. The battery life is outstanding, outlasting even flagship phones.
-
The device more than delivers for young professionals or Android users who want a powerful phone without spending four figures.
- BGR 8/10
The Google Pixel 9a is more of the same, in a good way. It performs very well for a phone in this price range, plus it has an excellent software experience, a great camera, and helpful features.
-
The Pixel 9a is the latest budget phone from Google, and despite not always being the best when it comes to raw specs, it wins me over with some clever design choices that might just make it my favorite Pixel—at least until the Pixel 10 comes out.
-
The Pixel 9a isn’t just a great budget phone, it’s one of the best phones you can buy, period.
- IGN 7/10
If you get the Pixel 9a, you won’t be getting a bad phone, but if you want something better, you can just wait for a discount.
-
All the same though, I'd say unless you're a hardcore gamer or something, you should be more than satisfied having the Pixel 9a stuffed in your pants for the long haul.
-
This phone ticks a lot of boxes, and it's a great value for money, but the most annoying things to me are the lowquality front and back materials, the thick bezels, and the lack of video boost.
-
[T]here are a couple of drawbacks here that you might want to take note of before actually buying the phone.
-
It's going to last you a long time.
-
The Pixel 9a has once again set the standard in the midrange smartphone market. It is a *much* better device than the more expensive iPhone 16e.
-
Yeah, the Pixel 9A is not as bad a phone if you look at how well it does in each aspect.
-
With all that said, I would still recommend the Pixel 9a as an alternative to other mid-range smartphone on tap, especially for the ones wanting to be part of the Pixel fold but don’t necessarily wish to pay the premium commanded by the bigger and more opulent Pixel 9 Pro XL.
-
Its ratio of value, performance, design, camera quality, and features is quite simply unmatched.
-
Honestly, this phone continues to impress me. It checks off so many of the boxes as it has a great build quality and a smooth and vibrant display.
-
If you want a budget phone, this seems like a great option, especially if you maybe wanted to try switching from an iPhone.
-
Altogether, the Pixel 9a is still probably the best phone under 500 bucks.
-
The Pixel 9a wins in this field simply because it’s the best-balanced midrange phone on the market. It’s more than fast enough, rarely leaves you pining for more battery life, and takes stellar photos in its price range.
-
The Google Pixel 9a delivers flagship-level performance, outstanding camera capabilities, and impressive battery life in a beautifully designed package that represents exceptional value for money.

definitely feels like a pretty nice upgrade from the previous Pixel 8a now that you get 7 years of software updates on the Pixel 8a and the 9A.
-
If you ask yourself that question, what is the best deal that I could find for under $500? I would definitely say the best smartphone deal you could find, it's going to be on the Pixel 9a.
-
The Pixel 9a is the first a-series Pixel with camera performance that can go toe-to-toe with the flagships.
-
[T]he Pixel 9A camera system is really that good.
-
It's been pretty fantastic and it definitely feels like a Pixel 9.
-
If you want a phone that nails the essentials, great camera, long battery life, smooth display, and years of updates, the Pixel 9a is an excellent choice.
-
It's not bad, it gets the job done, and again, for $499, it's tough to beat.
-
I don't think that you're going to have any severe buyer remorse if any at all that was a weird way to put it. I don't think that you'll hate your purchase if you pick up the 9a.
-
For me, it strikes a balance between being compact, smooth, and reliable. But the slow charging speed is a real let down.
