Fujifilm’s Instax Square Lineup Gets a Well-Rounded, Moodier New Camera

Fujifilm has announced the Instax Square 2 instant camera, the latest addition to the company’s popular, iconic Instax Square family of products.

The Instax Square 2 features a fresh, familiar look. Fujifilm describes the redesigned camera as “clean” and “sculpted,” and those seem like fair descriptors. The camera has a chunky, smoothed plastic body with engraved grip textures. These vertical lines match the vertical engravings around the large front lens.

Compared to 2020’s Instax Square SQ1, the Square 2 is quite similar but significantly smoother around the edges. Whereas the SQ1 is boxy, the Square 2 is a bit more bubbly.

The camera weighs 450 grams (just under a pound) without batteries or film loaded and is 139 x 119.5 x 71 millimeters (5.5 x 4.7 x 2.8 inches). Speaking of batteries, the camera takes four AA-size batteries, which should be sufficient for shooting 30 Instax Square film packs with 10 shots each.

Speaking of the lens, it is a 66.75mm f/12.6 lens with a pair of elements. Given the 62 x 62mm image area on Instax Square film, the lens is roughly equivalent to a 32mm lens on a full-frame camera.

The camera features a reverse Galilean viewfinder with 0.4x magnification and a central target spot. It features a built-in selfie mirror and a classic xenon flash unit. The lens has three focus modes, Standard, Close-up, and Landscape, with a focus range from 0.3 meters (0.98 feet) to infinity.

“Our instax Square products have always brought the classic style and symmetry many instant photographers seek when making images,” says Bing Liem, division president, Imaging Division, Fujifilm North America Corporation.

“Not too big, not too small, a new Square camera option has been sought after for some time by our consumer base, so we’re excited to bring it to them with a brand new look and features not before seen in our Square lineup,” Liem continues.

The camera has Automatic Exposure and Automatic Flash options, a new Mood Filter Switch that lets users adjust the overall color, tone, or mood of their photos, and intuitive twist-to-operate controls to swap between shooting modes. There are two “Mood” filters: Cool or Warm. Users can also stick with the classic Instax look.

The Fujifilm Instax Square 2 instant film camera comes in three colors, Slate Blue, Misty White, and Brick Red, and is $119.95 in the United States and $139.99 in Canada. Fujifilm says the camera will begin shipping in late October.

Alongside the new Instax Square 2 camera, Fujifilm has also unveiled new Instax Square Soft Haze instant film. This new film reduces saturation and contrast, promising a softer look for photos with diffuse, glowing lights. One pack of 10 shots is $18.99 in the United States and $16.99 in Canada, reversing the typical price situation.
