Novachips’ New CFexpress For Sony Cameras is Cheaper Than an SD Card
Novachips, a South Korean-based memory manufacturer, announced that its new 400GB CFexpress Type A memory card — the type used by Sony cameras — costs just $140, which it says is less than some V60 and many V90 SD cards, but packs more than double the speed and nearly twice the storage capacity.
A cursory glance at prices for SanDisk, Lexar, and ProGrade Digital V90 256GB SD card options shows Novachips isn’t exaggerating. SanDisk’s V90 card is available for $180, Lexar’s costs $175, and ProGrade’s retails for $200.
“This card is the game changer,” SJ Yoo, Product Manager at Novachips, expounds. “For the first time, creators can get true CFexpress performance at a lower price than many SD cards — without sacrificing stability or thermal reliability.”
SD cards have historically been the go-to choice for photographers and videographers because they’re affordable and reliable, although in recent years, even the highest-end SD cards haven’t been able to keep up with top-end performance requirements from modern cameras. Sony cameras are typically pretty forgiving even when it comes to the most demanding resolutions and frame rates, however there are still some options that are locked to CFexpress cards and can’t be used with SD cards.
Novachips says its new 400GB CFexpress Type A card is not only cheaper than a majority of the mid- to high-end SD cards Sony photographers rely on, but it presents significantly more capability. The card has a high capacity and promises sustained write speeds of up to 800 MB/s. Its performance has also been verified by the Compact Flash Association (CFA) with the Video Performance Guarantee (VPG) rating of 400, meaning even under the highest strain, a VPG400 card will never drop below a sustained read and write performance of 400 MB/s. Sony only requires a VPG 200 rating for its most demanding video functions in even its dedicated video cameras, so the Novachips card is more than fast enough.
“Designed with custom-engineered hardware and fine-tuned firmware, the 400GB card delivers consistent sustained write speeds and exceptional thermal control — even during long-format video shoots or continuous burst photography,” Novachips says. “It also benefits from advanced over-provisioning, a technology typically reserved for high-end enterprise SSDs, which boosts endurance, improves performance stability, and ensures data integrity over time. This makes the card particularly suited for professional cinema and content production workflows where reliability is non-negotiable.”
The Novachips CFexpress Type A 400GB card is available starting today for $140, which the company says makes it the most cost-effective VPG 400-certified CFexpress Type A card on the market.
