Instagram Now Lets Users Make AI-Generated Backgrounds For Stories

Instagram has introduced a new feature that will let users make artificial intelligence (AI) generated backgrounds for Stories.

On Wednesday, Meta introduced its generative AI-powered background editing tool to Instagram users based in the U.S.

Meta’s lead for generative AI Ahmad Al-Dahle announced Instagram’s new AI image generator for backgrounds of Stories on Threads.

Dahle said that the new feature will allow Instagram users to use AI technology to generate text-to-image prompts and change the background to their photos in Stories. Users can edit the background of their photo so it looks like they are getting “chased by a lion” or being “surrounded by kittens.”

“Our AI media editing tool backdrop is available on Instagram in the U.S.!” Dahle writes on Threads.

“With backdrop, you can reimagine your image’s background with just a few taps and a prompt like ‘chased by dinosaurs’ or ‘surrounded by puppies’ to create an entirely new image for your Story.”

“Tap the button for backdrop at the top of a new Story to get started. And once you’ve posted, a ‘Try it”’ sticker will appear when you share the image created, making it even easier for your friends to use backdrop for the first time.”

Meta’s AI Moves

This recent release from Instagram follows similar moves in the field of AI-generated content by other social media platforms.

This week, Snapchat introduced a tool that allows paying users to create and send AI-generated images. Snapchat has been actively enhancing its features, recently launching Dreams — a feature enabling users to generate whimsical images of themselves with various themes.

According to TechCrunch, Meta has been constantly expanding its AI capabilities. In the past month, Meta made 28 AI-powered characters accessible across all its popular apps, including WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram.

Earlier this month, Meta also introduced Imagine with Meta, a standalone AI-image generator to compete with the likes of DALL-E and Midjourney. Meta’s AI Image generator is powered by its own model called Emu.

Meta also unveiled an AI feature contained in the Messenger app called “Reimagine.” This allows the users to remix and re-edit an AI image that someone else in the chat has created.
