Moment’s New 1.55x Anamorphic Lens Adds a Hollywood Look to iPhone Vids

Moment’s new 1.55x anamorphic lens with gold flare promises to bring a classic Hollywood look to video shot on iPhone.

Anamorphic lenses are those that turn normal footage into a wider aspect ratio at the same focal length by “squeezing” the footage which, after a post-production de-squeeze, produces the ultra-wide aspect ratio seen in high-end cinema. Moment says that anamorphic lenses capture more light, allow for greater depth of field, increased sharpness in the image, and a more attractive background blur or bokeh.

Most know an anamorphic’s other visual effect by the lens flares that were most popularized by JJ Abrams films.

The mobile anamorphic lens is inspired by the 1.5x Icorama 54 but is designed for use on mobile devices. The Moment M-Series 1.55x anamorphic lens produces what the company describes as a subtle blue flare combined with yellow and gold that brings a cinematic look to videos shot on smartphone.

“Less sci-fi and more neutral, this combination give you rich tones and golden flares, with an ultra-wide format that will take your videos to the next level. Whether shooting indoors or during golden hour this lens will make your videos pop,” Moment says.

This new 1.55x Anamorphic isn’t Moment’s first such lens, but it is the company’s widest. For those looking for a tighter frame, it also offers a 1.33x anamorphic lens.

The Lens works by connecting to a Moment Case or M-series lens mount. As mentioned, anamorphic lense usually require de-squeezing in editing, but Moment’s iOS camera app has this feature built-in and allows filmmakers to shoot and save video directly to the camera roll.

The 1.55x Anamorphic lens is compatible with Moment’s existing 67mm Lens Filter Mount, allowing filmmakers to use filters with it too.

“Thanks to the built-in (M)Force magnets in your phone case, you can attach gear to your phone or your phone to gear using MagSafe while still using the lens,” Moment adds.

Moment says that the lens isn’t just great for filmmakers, it also produces excellent stills.

Sandmarc also produces an anamorphic lens for iPhone, but for those who want to shoot with full-size equipment, Moment makes a 1.33x Anamorphic Lens Adapter that can change any optic into an anamorphic lens.

The moment M-Series 1.55x Anamorphic Lens with Gold Flare is available from Moment for $150, but is discounted to $120 for the next few days. The lens will ship starting in March.
