Fujifilm’s New Instax Share SP-3 Is Its First Square-Format Photo Printer

Fujifilm just announced its first square-format Instax photo printer, the Instax Share SP-3. The printer is aimed at users wanting to print smartphone images using Fuji’s new Instax Square film.

The rise of Instagram has breathed new life into the square 1:1 photo ratio and Fujifilm wants to bring that love of photography from social media into real prints. The Instax Share printer will do that in just 13 seconds per print. Here’s a 14-minute hands-on introduction to the printer:

The SP-3 follows in the footsteps of the Fujifilm SQ10 hybrid instant camera, which was the first to use Fuji Square Film.

The Instax Share SP-3 is sleek in design and will be available in black or white finishes. Despite being targeted to smartphone users, the printer will also work directly with Fujifilm’s X series of cameras.

High-resolution results are available with print pixels of 800 x 800 dots and 318 dpi – each print is 2.4 x 2.4 inches (6 x 6 cm) in size. Each battery charge will allow of up to 160 of these prints.

The printer will automatically set the “optimum brightness” for the print using its proprietary image processing technology. It also has integrated wireless capabilities.

Fujifilm’s Instax Share app is used to print images from your smartphone, and it just received a new update. The app is available for free for Android and iOS devices. A new collage template will allow for 9 photos per sheet with the ability to add colored text and other customizations. Another 11 templates, ranging from magazine covers to CD jackets, will be available as well.

Instagram is accessible straight from the Instax Share app, allowing you to choose the perfect image for printing based on its hashtag. This is a great way to sort and find photos “with ease,” such as at events when a number of users are uploading photos under a particular hashtag.

The Instax Share SP-3 will be available from November 2017 for $200. Instax Square film is available for $14 for a pack of 10 sheets.
