‘Gotham City SF’ Offers a Dark and Gritty View of the City by the Bay

Downtown San Francisco

“Gotham City SF” is a time-lapse and photo project by San Francisco-based photographer Toby Harriman that offers a black-and-white view of The City by the Bay that’s inspired by Gotham City, the fictional home of Batman.

The idea came to Harriman back in 2012 while he was just discovering a passion for monochrome photography. He wandered into a look he dubbed “Gotham,” and shot a series of photos of San Francisco with that style.

After discovering the world of time-lapse photography recently, Harriman decided to revisit his “Gotham” concept in a new time-lapse project, and “Gotham City SF” was born. Here’s the time-lapse he created:

Harriman shot and edited this project over a number of years while doing freelance work and working at Lytro as a photo editor.

Everything you see was captured with a Canon 6D, Canon 5D Mark III, and a collection of Canon L lenses. For motion, Harriman used an eMotimo 3-Axis system and a Kessler Shuttle Pod Mini 8 foot dolly.

Here are some of the still photographs that went into the time-lapse:
