Canon uses a red ring on its L series lenses to signify quality. Leica just turned an entire lens red. It just unveiled a new limited edition version of the APO-Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 ASPH, the first ever Leica lens to come in a red finish.

“The world’s sharpest standard lens will be available in a special edition red anodized finish,” Leica says.

Each lens will also come with a matching red lens cap and a special gray cowhide leather case.

Available starting December 2016, the red 50mm f/2 will carry a price tag of $8,950. By comparison, the standard black and silver versions of the lens are currently priced at $7,995.

But the extra $1,000 or so is a small price to pay considering the rarity of the lens: only 100 of the red-colored lenses will be sold across the entire world. So even if you have the dough and the desire, getting your hands on one of these eye-catching Leica lenses won’t be an easy thing to do.
