Walter Leica, a small company known for their specialized lineup for Leica’s M-series cameras, has released an interesting little piece of gear. It’s called the Walter Contrast Lens and it’s a little, gold-toned eyepiece designed to improve focusing capabilities.

Meticulously designed one at a time, the Walter Contrast Lens is a multi-coated optic, specially tinted to improve contrast when looking through the viewfinder. Wrapped inside of a ‘Gun Kote’ brass, the curved lens gives a larger, clearer view than the original Walter Eyepiece.

Seems that someone at Walter Leica went to or knew about Ansel Adam’s workshops. Adams suggested using a panchromatic viewing filter to learn how to previsualize scenes by stripping out the color and showing the inherent color as it would be captured on B/W film. He suggested a cheaper alternative of a Kodak Wratten Filter No. 90 which gives you approximately the same effect.
