Nikon Says “I Am Coming”, Counts Down to Mirrorless Unveiling

Nikon has set up a teaser page titled “I AM COMING”, with a countdown that ends on Wednesday September 21. With all the rumors that have been floating around, it would be pretty shocking if this wasn’t the company’s mirrorless camera announcement. Looks like Nikon couldn’t snag the domain name “iamcoming.com”, though — the teaser is at iamcomings.com.

But… Why? Why start an entirely new mirrorless system when a) there’s already an oversaturation of products on the market, and b) the Micro Four Thirds system is kicking ass?
I wish they would just join MFT – it’d be an incredibly beneficial partnership for all the parties involved – especially the consumers!

Are they going to end up blackmailing us for ten percent of our children?

Why are you hyping it for them?  Their last major mystery unveiling was a dud.  People thought it was going to be a new Nikon medium format camera system.  I forget what really came out, but it wasn’t as spectacular as the promotional material tried to say it was.

Because everyone else is, it’s called staying competitive.

Does anyone remember Nikon’s other lame campaigns from 2003 that kept everyone waiting, the Nikon Coolpix SQ

This has to be the best, most disgusting, most awful marketing campaign yet from Nikon. I can’t wait to be completely disappointed in everything that they release all over the iamcomings.com page. Medium format? Please, that’s not a consumer-driven product. Mirrorless? Maybe, but everyone else is already “drinking Nikon’s milkshake” on that one, why bother? D4 and D800/D400? Possibly, but why sink money into that when you can just release more crappy point and shoots with much higher margins?

I’m currently a Nikon D300s user, but I’d like to dump them. the way that innovative imaging is being handled by both Nikon and Canon is just getting wasteful and insulting. Too bad there aren’t more camera companies that focus on good, solid, reliable, hobbyist/amateur and professional systems (like Sigma -the Foveon processor is amazing- without the crappy cameras for terrible prices). Why can’t there be a Leica without the ridiculous prices and god-forsaken supply/demand control?

I’d care a lot more if it was the new D4/D800/D400… It’s getting to the point I’m not even sure I want to stick with Nikon if they’re not going to release a new prosumer/pro body in the next year.
