Sony Introduces First 16.41 Megapixel Sensor for Cell Phones

It was only at the beginning of the year that the megapixel race for cell phone cameras hit 14.6 megapixels, but now Sony has unveiled a 16.41 back-illuminated CMOS sensor that can shoot 15 frames per second at full resolution, and is capable of HD video recording (30fps at 1080p and 60fps at 720p).

You can read the entire press release over Sony’s website here. Expect cameras equipped with this sensor to hit the market sometime next year.

Its going to be interesting when a ~$200 phone has a bigger sensor than my $1500 D300s

learn the difference between bigger and more mega pixels. higher megapixels only leads to a larger image size. it has nothing to do with image quality or clarity. in the end these high pixel counts on all these cameras, slrs, point and shoots, and cell phones, are just worsening the final image quality because of all the interpolation photo editors have to do to downsize the image. most consumers dont have a need for anything over 8 megapixels, but stupid consumers are convinced higher means better.

Agree! but at least some of those 8mpix sensors are better than old 8mpix P&S sensors for noise ever. vise versa…
