The Modernist Houses of Palm Springs Photographed Under a Full Moon

If you do a search for photos of Palm Springs online, the vast majority of the results will show the city basked in the rays of Southern California sunshine. Photographer Tom Blachford wanted to take a different approach. For his project Midnight Modern, Blachford photographed the modernist homes of the resort city under only the light of a full moon.

The Darkest Material on the Planet Absorbs 99.96% of Light that Touches it; How Would You Use It?

The possibilities for photography are endless. That's the thought that crossed our minds earlier today when we stumbled across Vantablack, the new 'darkest material on the planet.'

Created by UK-based Surrey NanoSystems, this nanotube material is designed to reflect back as little radiation as possible... and it's darn good at its job. According to Surrey, the material absorbs 99.96% of all the light that touches it.

Back in March, Canon announced that it was working on a special 35mm low-light sensor that would blow away all other competition when it came to seeing things in near complete darkness. In order to further prove that point, the company sent a prototype out to shoot tiny fireflies in less than 0.01lux on Japan's Ishigaki Island.

Photos of a World in Darkness Illuminated by Single Sources of Light

French photographer Julien Mauve has always been fascinated by light, and his project "After Lights Out" is an interesting study of the subject. The series is based on a simple idea: what would it look like if darkness overtook our world, and only a single source of light were present to pierce the darkness?

Each of the scenes seen in Mauve's photos are completely devoid of artificial light except from a single source, through a single window.

A Study of Shadows in Manhattan During the Blackout Caused by Hurricane Sandy

To view photographer Romain Laurent's Shadows project properly, he recommends that you first properly calibrate your screen. The photos are all dominated by blackness.

You see, they were all captured during the major blackout in New York City caused by Hurricane Sandy in late 2012. When the power went out in the city's financial district, Laurent pulled out his camera in order to do a photographic study of light and shadows in the eerily dark areas of the city.

Photographs of a New York City Plunged Into Darkness After the Storm

After Hurricane Sandy devastated New York City earlier this week, photographer Randy Scott Slavin ventured around various areas that had been plunged into darkness due to power outages. He shot eerie long-exposure photographs that make the city look like a ghost town. The series is titled "NYC Unplugged."
