It’s unlikely to excel when assessed using such things as brick-wall shots or MTF charts. However, judging a lens on sharpness alone risks missing the wood for the trees.

  • The Digital Picture

The Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 DC Art Lens features a high utility focal length range, an extremely wide f/1.8 aperture over the entire range, and excellent image quality, including at f/1.8.

Sigma has done a brilliant job of updating a cult classic for the mirrorless era. The Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 DC | ART is improved in basically every fact over the 18-35mm F1.8 that I reviewed on Canon EF more than a decade ago.

The Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art may not quite be a perfect lens, but still, it's a pretty amazing one, and I think most people watching this video with APS-C cameras should consider dropping everything they're doing right now and going out and buying one.

  • LensTip

It is an excellent lens, with unique parameters and a sensational image resolution across the frame and for all apertures. Taking into account its brilliant performance and great parameters the Sigma is really sensibly priced, as it can be bought for around $920.

This Sigma for APS-C cameras is as fast as many primes, and 1.33 f/stops faster than an f/2.8 zoom, while also being refreshingly compact and lightweight. It’s also a great performer with lovely image quality and handling, and is standout value at the price.

Its optical stabilization and longer zoom range are more worthwhile for everyday photography, especially for photographers who use a camera that doesn't have in-body image stabilization. But the Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 DC Art is a worthwhile pickup if you want an extra-bright zoom.

The Sigma Art lens is the perfect size to mount on a Sony A6300, and gives fantastic image quality, even shot wide open. Another unique and very fast zoom from Sigma that APS-C users have been calling for.

  • I honestly don’t think that the negatives (relatively large and heavy and only 40mm on the long end) outweigh the benefits – this is an extremely sharp lens, offering incredible image quality [...] and [...] great subject separation.

It doesn't matter what camera you've got. If you want a premium APS-C zoom lens, but you're after one that's got the brightest aperture, I highly recommend buying the Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art.

[T]his definitely will feel like a full frame lens on your wallet as well. However, if you are looking forward to shooting professional level content on your APSC camera without upgrading to full frame bodies then this, we would say, is an easy choice.

This lens has really impressed me. Even on the R7, which is a camera I've historically had a pretty bad time with, this has been an absolute joy to use with just top class performance all the way through the range.
