Canon RF users now have an option for a shallow depth of field portrait photography lens that also doubles as a great lens for cinema work. At $1649, you are paying L-series pricing, but you are getting L-series results.

Like other RF primes in the hybrid L series, it's well featured, focuses quickly and quietly, and delivers pin sharp details that, in my test here, look crisper than Canon's earlier 85s, including the 1.2L, while maintaining nicely rendered bokeh in the blurred areas.

For stills, a superbly sharp 85mm lens perfect for portraits, weddings and social events plus of course all the usual applications for a short telephoto. For video, virtually silent VCM focusing plus a silent click-free aperture ring.

It's not cheap, but it's optically excellent. Despite it being the fifth lens in the series of f/1.4 VCM primes, I can see the 85mm finding its way into the top two in terms of popularity, given the focal length, and those who buy it won't be disappointed – it's a fabulous lens.

For that, you're getting the longest hybrid prime in the lineup so far with stunning clarity, edge-to-edge sharpness, smooth bokeh, and reliable autofocus. I think this will be a very desirable choice for a lot of creators.

It’s particularly appealing for women photographers and hybrid creators who need a versatile, compact prime that performs just as well for video as it does for stills.
