Reviewer Consensus

Good

The Canon EOS Rebel T8i is a capable entry-level DSLR that features reliable Dual Pixel autofocus and a versatile vari-angle touchscreen for photography and vlogging. That said, it feels somewhat outdated as a 4K video tool due to significant sensor cropping and the loss of advanced autofocus tracking in that mode.

Ultimately the EOS 850D / Rebel T8i is a fine DSLR and one that performs well for the money - and if you’re after a Canon DSLR at this price point, I can recommend it.

  • Amateur Photographer

Ultimately, the EOS 850D / T8i is about as good as you’ll get from a DSLR at this level, but feels outdated compared to its smaller, slicker mirrorless competitors.

  • The Digital Picture

Just like its predecessors, the Canon EOS Rebel T8i delivers great professional-grade image quality in a compact, lightweight, feature-filled, very-easy-to-use body that carries a very affordable price tag.

  • Compared to cheaper Canon and Nikon DSLRs, the Canon EOS 850D offers a better specification with quicker continuous shooting at 7/7.5fps, as well as more focus points, and 4K UHD video recording.

The Canon EOS Rebel T8i SLR offers a few improvements over the T7i, but most family photographers are better off with a mirrorless system in 2020.

If you still prefer DSLRs to mirrorless cameras, the dinky EOS Rebel T8i / 850D is a capable camera with excellent autofocus and a vari-angle touchscreen. It also produces lovely images.

  • Digital Trends 6/10

When it comes down to it, the Canon EOS Rebel T8i is still the best Rebel yet — but just. The new controls make for one worthy improvement, but the half-hearted 4K video mode doesn’t do enough to keep the camera current.

The T8i is probably a good compromise for a lot of people; it's not the cheapest camera that you might quickly grow out of and it's not too expensive and it doesn't have too many features that you may not need right now.

  • Thomas Tech

At the end of the day, the Canon EOS Rebel T8i is one of the most well-rounded entry-level DSLRs on the market right now. It delivers excellent image quality, reliable performance, solid out of focus, and video features that are more capable than ever before in the Rebel line.

This is obviously a very good camera for vlogging; it has that tilt out screen that we all know and love so well at this point, so it's nice to be able to go in there and be able to shoot some video in this fashion, so it's pretty, pretty neat there.

[T]he Canon T8i is a great little camera and it's capable of taking very high quality video and photos, and I think this camera would be great for both intermediate and beginner photographers, but there just isn't a really big difference between this camera and the T7i.
