New iPhone Camera App Makes You Wait To See Your Photos

Mexico-based documentary photographer Dennis Berti developed WorthWait, a new mobile camera app that replicates the disposable-camera experience.
Berti’s new app, WorthWait Camera, lets users capture 24 or 36 shots per “roll,” then wait 24 hours to see them. It’s designed to recreate the feeling of waiting for photos and not knowing what was captured until the film was developed.

As Berti says, the waiting period is not a technical limitation, but an intentional decision. It is one of the app’s key selling points.
Photographers are locked to a 35mm-equivalent lens, a common built-in lens on classic disposable film cameras, and can choose from four simulated films: Original, Negative, Positive, and Flat. Berti says that if users aren’t sure which film to pick, they should opt for Negative. It promises the “nostalgia of an authentic negative.”
Users can also select their aspect ratio, choosing between 1:1, 3:2, and the iPhone’s native format, 4:3.
The app itself is streamlined. The paid version includes a full-screen viewfinder experience with no visible controls. It also has a mode with exposure compensation and a third mode, “Blind Mode,” with no preview on the screen at all.

“Just the light, your instinct, and where your hand is pointing,” Berti says of WorthWait’s Blind Mode. “You won’t even know the frame until the roll develops, 24 hours after it’s finished.

As mentioned above, WorthWait has a full paid version called Plena, a one-time purchase for $14.99. The paid version includes the ability to develop without waiting, although again, that will somewhat defeat part of the purpose. It also includes 36-shot rolls, the ability to start up to five different rolls, and Full Immersion mode.
The free version of the app is almost fully functional. It lets users start one film roll at a time, has access to all four different film looks, and includes the standard mode and Blind Mode. It requires a 24-hour waiting period after finishing shooting a roll to see the results.
WorthWait is available on iOS right now and is coming to Android in November.
