Sirui’s New Tripod Head Doesn’t Make You Choose Between a Ball or Fluid Head

Sirui has announced the BH-60, an integrated Ball and Fluid Head designed for photographers, content creators, and hybrid users. It promises to combine a ball head’s photography-friendly versatility with a fluid head’s smooth, video-friendly control in a single system.

The Sirui BH-60 includes a dual-mode design that the company says makes it ideal for both photography and video. Per Sirui, users can easily switch between ball head mode and fluid video mode, compose with the ball head, then switch to the fluid head for smooth camera motion during video recording. Many photographers prefer a ball head design because it’s fast and easy to set up a composition, but it lacks smooth, controlled movement.

That’s where a fluid head excels. The Pan-Tilt Mode uses an integrated fluid damping system to deliver smoother camera movements than the ball head. This means that users can have more controlled pans during video recording and capture stabler, smoother video. The head has a +/- 40° tilt range, Sirui adds.

The BH-60 also includes a detachable control handle, which is particularly useful for controlling movements during video. The handle is 230 millimeters (nine inches) long. It can be attached to either side of the tripod head. The company notes that the handle may not add much for photographers, so detaching it makes for a lighter, smaller tripod kit.

The BH-60 includes a dual-locking mechanism, a safety lock-equipped quick release plate, and an Arca-Swiss compatible design.

For panoramic photographers in particular, the BH-60 includes an independent panoramic locking system and a 360-degree rotating base.

The BH-60 attaches to a wide range of tripod legs, including Sirui’s own offerings, and is built from aluminum alloy. The BH-60 supports a maximum payload of five kilograms (just over 11 pounds), which should work well for a wide range of kits. For example, a Sony a7R VI with a Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II lens weighs about 1,750 grams (3.9 pounds), showing the kind of kit users can reasonably mount on the Sirui BH-60.
