Elgato Convertible Wave Go Is a Clip-On and Handheld Mic in One

Elgato, a big name in content creation and streaming, has announced the Wave Go, which it describes as a “convertible wireless mic.”

In one configuration, the Elgato Wave Go looks a lot like many small wireless mics on the market, including something like a DJI Mic. It is a small, rectangular wireless mic that easily attaches to clothing.

However, what sets the Wave Go apart from something like the DJI Mic is that the Wave Go mic capsule fits inside a more traditional microphone-shaped holder, what Elgato calls a “smart handle.” This handle has on-device controls for power, recording, and muting.

“Works both ways,” Elgato says of the Wave Go. “How you record changes. Your mic should too. Wave Go gives you two modes in one, so you never have to make do or carry extra gear.”

The smart handle also has a built-in battery to charge the transmitter while it’s in use. Elgato says it delivers 48 hours of total runtime, though only eight hours when the transmitter is used in its clip-on configuration. 10 minutes of quick charging adds another hour of use.

Whether used as a clip-on or handheld mic, the Wave Go makes the same promise of convenient, high-quality sound. The system automatically adapts to the selected configuration and adjusts its recording to deliver “rich” audio quality.

Unlike some competing wireless mics, though, Elgato isn’t targeting the entire market. The company notes that the Wave Go is designed specifically for use with USB-C devices, like a phone or computer, and not made for direct use with a professional digital camera. The mic works only with its USB-C receiver, and Bluetooth connects only to the companion app. Elgato says the wireless range is up to 100 feet (30 meters).

It has no onboard recording, no additional external mic support (the USB-C receiver supports up to two mics), and records up to 24-bit audio.

Of course, for those who want to use a wireless mic with their digital camera, the Elgato Wave Go is not the right choice. But for users who instead work through their phone or computer, it is an interesting new product. It would be nice to see other manufacturers embrace a convertible, two-in-one design like this, even if most users are happy with a clip-on mic.

The Elgato Wave Go is available now for $99.99 with the USB-C receiver, smart handle, and one mic. A second mic is $14.99 at the time of writing, although the regular price is $29.99. The Elgato Wave Go comes in black and sky blue.
