Apple Stores to Push iPhone Duo Demonstrations

Apple is preparing an extensive in-store demonstration campaign ahead of the October 23 launch of the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, a reliable Apple insider, the company plans to allocate substantially more demonstration devices to major retail locations than to its standard stores, giving customers more opportunities to try the new design before deciding whether to buy it.

Apple’s Fifth Avenue flagship in New York is expected to receive more than 150 units for hands-on demonstrations and in-store displays. The Apple Park Visitor Center in California will have nearly 100, while other prominent locations, including Michigan Avenue in Chicago, The Grove in Los Angeles, and the Upper West Side store in Manhattan, are expected to receive approximately 30 to 40 units each. Most other stores will have around 20 demonstration devices on average.

The retail preparations extend beyond the number of units available to try. Gurman notes that Apple Stores are expected to introduce an additional spotlight table for the iPhone Duo, and the company has reportedly developed a dedicated display fixture to demonstrate how the device opens and closes. The setup is intended to make the foldable design a prominent feature of the in-store experience.

Customers will also be able to explore StandBy mode using demonstration units without security tethers in the Fifth Avenue display areas along the sides of stores. For side-by-side comparisons, Apple has designed a MagSafe stand that holds an unfolded iPhone Duo alongside two conventional iPhones, allowing shoppers to examine the differences between the foldable and traditional designs.

The scale of the demonstration rollout reflects the importance of helping customers experience the new form factor in person. As Apple’s first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo differs from the company’s conventional annual iPhone updates, making hands-on testing a potentially significant part of the purchasing decision.

The preparations are taking place as Apple works to manage production constraints ahead of launch. Gurman reports that the company had considered the possibility of delaying sales until later in November because of manufacturing challenges. Apple has since assembled enough sellable inventory to proceed with the October release, although supply is still expected to be limited. The large number of demonstration units therefore contrasts with the tighter availability anticipated for customers purchasing the device.

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States and £1,999 in the United Kingdom. Pre-orders open on October 16, with the retail launch scheduled for October 23. Apple’s expanded demonstration setup will give prospective buyers an opportunity to test the device ahead of release, even as limited stock may make securing one at launch more difficult.

While interest is high for the Duo, PetaPixel reported last month that there are serious camera compromises.
