Tamron is bringing the 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD lens that was originally announced for Sony E-mount in 2022 to Nikon Z-mount.

Positioned as its “challenge” to the more typical 100-400mm focal range, the full-frame 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD (model A067) features an 8x zoom ratio that starts at the “standard” focal length for full-frame cameras but extends out to 400mm in a package that is smaller and lighter than the conventional 100-400mm but offers a wider angle of view on the wide end “for excellent versatility.”

A Tamron camera lens featuring various focal length markings ranging from 50mm to 400mm. The lens has a zoom ring, focus ring, and switches for vibration control and custom settings. The lens is predominantly black with white lettering.

It is relatively compact given the focal range, too. It measures 7.3 inches (185.8mm) long and weighs 41.6 oz (1,180g), which Tamron says combines to make the 50-400mm extraordinarily compact and easy to carry.

As is common on Tamron lenses, the 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 features the company’s Vibration Compensation (VC) mechanism. This proprietary image stabilization technology promises to effectively reduce image blurring due to camera shake. Beyond that, Tamron says that thanks to the application of AI algorithms, the lens chooses the appropriate compensation characteristics for videography at focal lengths of 100mm or less.

The 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD is constructed from 24 elements arranged in 18 groups including including two XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion), three LD (Low Dispersion), one GM (Glass Molded Aspherical), and one Hybrid Aspherical lens elements which Tamron says “thoroughly” control aberrations, including axial chromatic aberration.

“The Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 VC also features Tamron’ss legendary BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) Coating that minimizes ghosting and flares and expresses the minute details of subjects even under backlit conditions. No matter what circumstances you find yourself in, the 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 VC delivers clear and crisp images shot after shot,” the company says.

The lens features a 67mm front filter thread, features a nine-bladed aperture diaphragm (which can close down between f/22 and f/32 depending on focal length), has moisture-resistant construction, features external autofocus/manual focus switches, includes a focus set button, has a lock switch, and features a 75-degree zoom ring rotation arc.

The Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD will be available for Nikon Z-mount cameras on September 19, 2024, for $1,299.
