Chinese lens maker 7Artisans has announced an entirely redesigned 35mm f/1.4 Mark III lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras.

The lens has been redesigned to incorporate low-dispersion glass elements. Like its predecessor, the appropriately named Mark II lens, the new 35mm f/1.4 III has seven lens elements arranged across five groups. However, it now includes an ED element to improve image quality.

It brings another significant change: the ability for the user to toggle between a clicked and de-clicked, or smooth, aperture control ring. While many photographers prefer the tactile experience and precise control of a clicked aperture ring, videographers typically prefer smooth aperture control.

“This versatility makes it ideal for photographers and videographers who demand flexibility and precision in their work,” 7Artisans explains. The aperture diaphragm has 10 blades.

Another change, albeit a cosmetic one, is that the new 35mm f/1.4 III is available in two colors. Joining the existing, traditional black colorway is a medium-gray titanium silver finish. The lens also now includes depth-of-field scale markings, which is another nice improvement.

7Artisans notes that the lens mount is made of chrome-plated metal, which it says “guarantees durability and beauty.” The markings on the lens’ all-metal barrel itself are laser engraved. The lens weighs about 274 grams (9.7 ounces), with some variation depending on the lens mount.

As shown in the specifications, the lens has a revised optical formula that includes an extra-low dispersion element. The lens also sports a new design, complete with a de-clickable aperture diaphragm and engraved depth of field markings.

Like its predecessors, the 7Artisans 35mm f/1.4 III lens is a manual focus prime. The minimum focusing distance is 0.3 meters (0.98 feet). The company says the lens is well-suited for portraiture, especially in low light, alongside street, travel, and landscape photography.

Pricing and Availability

The new Mark III lens is available to order now for $189 directly from 7Artisans. It’s yet to be available to purchase through other retailers, including Pergear, AVShutter, and B&H, although it should appear soon. The 35mm f/1.4 III is available in four mounts: E, L, RF, and Z. The L-mount version is new, replacing the Micro Four Thirds option available for the 35mm f/1.4 Mark II.
