Thypoch’s New Simera 50mm f/1.4 M Lens Is Light, Bright, and Affordable
Thypoch, a relative newcomer to the lens world, has made a strong impression with its impressive M-mount lenses, the Simera 28mm f/1.4 and 35mm f/1.4. The company is back with a new, longer prime lens, the Simera 50mm f/1.4.
Initially targeting M-mount users, the Simera 50mm f/1.4 is a full-frame, manual focus lens with a crescent-shaped focus tab and a much shorter minimum focus distance than most rangefinder-compatible lenses. With a minimum focusing distance of just 0.45 meters (1.48 feet), Thypoch says its new lens is superior up close to competing 50mm rangefinder lenses, which it says are typically limited to 0.7-0.9 meters (2.3-3 feet).
“This capability opens up new possibilities for close-up and intimate photography,” Thypoch says, adding that there is a “gentle resistance indicator at 0.7 meters, prompting users to switch to the EVF for even shorter focusing ranges.”
The Simera 50mm f/1.4 builds upon the design and optical performance of its shorter siblings, the 28mm and 35mm f/1.4 primes. The Simera 50mm f/1.4 promises “superb” image quality through its eight-element, six-group design. The lens includes one extra-low dispersion (ED) element and three high-refractive index (HRI) elements, “leading to sharp and clear images even at wide open [apertures] and [in the] corners.” The lens also has a floating element, ensuring strong performance at minimum focusing distance.
The new lens incorporates a “cine-standard” 14-blade aperture, promising circular bokeh. Thypoch says that thanks to its fast aperture, the 50mm f/1.4 delivers a “gentle focus falloff that evokes a three-dimensional cinematic visual.” The manual aperture control ring can be switched between clicked and de-clicked, ensuring good usability for photo and video applications.
With the addition of the Simera 50mm f/1.4 to the Thypoch Simera lineup, photographers now have two wide-angle options (28mm and 35mm) and the standard 50mm. Each lens shares the same f/1.4-16 aperture range, 49mm filter thread, and 14-bladed aperture.

Pricing and Availability
The Thypoch Simera 50mm f/1.4 comes in two finishes, silver and black, and ships with a square lens hood. The lens may look and feel premium, but it comes at a relatively affordable price of $749, significantly undercutting many M-mount competitors. The lens, while not yet available to preorder from Thypoch or B&H, will begin shipping in late September.
Speaking of the lens mount, the Simera 28mm f/1.4 and 35mm f/1.4 both launched exclusively in M-mount before expanding to E, RF, X, and Z mounts this past May, less than a year after Thypoch itself came into existence.
