Alongside Pergear’s new 1TB CFexpress Type-A card, the discount photography company has also launched something altogether different, an $80 50-megapixel waterproof action camera.

As its name suggests, the Pergear 5K 50MP Wide Angle Action Camera records video at up to 5K resolution and can capture still images at up to 50 megapixels. The camera promises advanced video stabilization from its EIS electronic anti-shake system, and when using an included protective case, it is waterproof to 98 feet (30 meters).

The action camera offers many modes that users expect, including time-lapse video, slow motion, and selfie modes. It also includes two screens, a rear 2-inch display, and a secondary 1.3-inch panel on the front. The rear screen has touch controls.

Taking a closer look at the action cam’s video features, its 5K resolution footage is capped at 30 frames per second, while 2.7K and 4K video is available at 60p frame rates. 1080p footage can be shot at 120p, while 720p footage goes up to 240p.

Precise details are relatively scarce: the company didn’t provide much to PetaPixel and Pergear’s website does not include a comprehensive specifications list. However, the company does explain that its new 5K action camera offers a 170-degree field of view via its built-in lens. The action camera also works alongside a dedicated smartphone app, allowing users to transfer photos and videos directly from the camera to their phone. It can also be remotely controlled over 2.4GHz.

Although Pergear is not divulging quite as much information as GoPro shares concerning its popular Hero action cams or DJI with its Osmo Action 4, Pergear’s camera is available at a fraction of the price.

As Digital Camera World notes, Pergear’s 5K video is not far from GoPro’s 5.3K resolution video. Of course, there is much more to image quality than resolution. Pergear doesn’t explain what image sensor it is using or offer any insight into its action camera’s optical design, aside from its field of view.

Not only is the Pergear 5K Action Camera impressively affordable, the $80 package ships with the camera, two batteries, a charger, USB-C cable, 2.4GHz remote control, waterproof case, shell clip, a 64GB microSD card, and several “small parts for mounting brackets.” That is an impressive assortment of accessories.
