After a woman who brazenly drove her car across the top of a frozen river in Canada crashed through the surface, onlookers were confused and shocked to find that she stopped to take a selfie with the sinking car before making it to safety.

A Woman’s Car Crashes Through the Ice-Covered River

After wintery conditions in Ottawa, Canada seemingly rendered the Rideau River frozen solid, a woman took advantage of the conditions to speed her bright yellow car across its surface, reports CTV News Ottawa. But the freeze wasn’t as solid as she thought, and her car collapsed through the ice.

Ottawa police say the car went through the ice on the south end of the river around 4:30 PM on Sunday.

Luckily the woman wasn’t alone in the area, and upon seeing her in danger of joining her car in the frozen waters, multiple onlookers mounted a rescue operation.

Zachary King, a local, saw the event unfolding and quickly retrieved a rope and kayak to help pull the woman to safety.

“So luckily one of my other neighbors, Rob Crober, had a rope that he had got, so he ran back to his place to grab one of his kayaks off his kayak rack,” King said. “It’s like everything worked out perfectly. Got her on the kayak, pulled her in. And as soon as we pulled her in, the car went under. Fully.”

Stopping for a Selfie

One event that confused onlookers was how the woman seemed to be reacting to her plight: as she waited to be rescued, she made sure to pose for a selfie while standing on the rear window of her rapidly sinking vehicle.

The entire event can be seen in video footage captured by onlookers.

“Thankfully no injuries and an amazing job by local residents saving the driver by using a kayak and quick safe thinking. Another reminder that ‘No Ice Is Safe Ice’. Please use extreme caution this winter season!” the police department said.

The woman has not been publicly identified, but has been charged with one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle the Criminal Code of Canada, The Independent reports.

“The vehicle is still in the river and could pose as a hazard for curious onlookers venturing out on the ice,” the police added.
