Tamron’s 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 is the First All-in-One Zoom to Start at f/2.8

Tamron has announced the new Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD lens, the world’s first all-in-one zoom lens that offers f/2.8 at the wide end.

Designed for Sony E-mount full frame cameras, the new 28-200mm lens (Model A071) represents Tamron’s continued commitment to pioneering in the area of all-in-one lenses, which Tamron first jumped into back in 1992 with the AF 28-200mm f/3.8-5.6 Aspherical (Model 71D).

“The new 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 is a distillation of all Tamron’s accumulated all-in-one zoom expertise and has been specifically developed as an all-in-one zoom for daily use on a full-frame mirrorless camera,” Tamron says. “Tamron chose Model A071 as the model name in a nod to “71” representing the world’s original compact all-in-one zoom.

“Breaking conventional limitations and broadening the horizons of photographic possibilities, this zoom lens writes a new chapter in the history of the all-in-one zoom lens.”

The lens offers f/2.8 at 28mm, f/3.5 at 50mm, f/4.5 at 100mm, and f/5.6 at 150mm and longer.

Inside the lens are 18 elements in 14 groups that include GM (Glass Molded Aspherical), hybrid aspherical, XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion), and LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements. These are “precisely arranged to effectively control chromatic and other aberrations, enabling high resolving power,” Tamron says.

On the front of the moisture-resistant lens is BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating that reduces ghosting and flare. There’s also a fluorine coating that repels oil and water.

Other features and specs of the lens include a weight of 20.3oz (0.58kg), a length of 4.6 inches (11.68cm), a filter diameter of 67mm, a minimum object distance of 7.5″ (19cm) on the wide end to 31.5″ (0.8m) on the telephoto end (max magnification ratios of 1:3.1 and 1:3.8, respectively), a fast and quiet RXD stepping motor, and a Zoom Lock switch.

Mounted on a mirrorless camera, the lens is compatible with features such as Fast Hybrid AF, Eye AF, Direct Manual Focus (DMF), in-camera lens correction, and camera-based lens firmware updates.

Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD lens is set to be available starting on June 25th with a price tag of $729.

But “due to the spread of COVID-19, the release date or the product supply schedule could be delayed,” Tamron notes.
