Canon Plans to Debut 80MP+ EOS R Camera in Early 2020: Report

Rumors for an ultra-high resolution Canon full-frame mirrorless camera are heating up. What began months ago as whispers that the Canon 5DS and 5DS R would be replaced by a mirrorless equivalent has turned into a new report that claims to reveal the specs of a Canon prototype that’s currently being tested.

Canon Rumors received this spec list just 24 hours after Canon News unearthed a patent for an 83MP image sensor that might be at the heart of this camera, which they’re calling the EOS RS for now.

According to CR’s source, who claims to have a prototype of the unreleased camera in hand, the Canon EOS RS will feature an 80MP full-frame image sensor, dual SD card slots, a larger LCD than the EOS R, a larger EVF than the EOS R, and a “new style of joystick,” all packed inside a body that is “slightly larger” than the EOS R. There’s also talk of a “tiltable” viewfinder, but the source may have been referring to the LCD.

As mentioned previously, it’s thought that this camera will spell the end of the 50MP Canon 5DS and 5DS R DSLRs, which will not see an official update. The 80MP+ full-frame mirrorless camera is rumored to arrive officially “in the first half of 2020.”
