Is Shooting 4K Resolution Worth It for Web Video?

Linus of LinusTechTips just published the 9-minute video above that explores whether shooting video at 4K resolution is worth it. Using both a Panasonic GH4 and a Sony FS700, Linus and his team take to discovering the links between video resolution, video bitrate, and downsampling.

“So if you’re producing web video, you may actually be better served by a superior 1080p camera this time,” Linus concludes, “because lenses, encoding settings, codecs, sensor size, and sensor quality all impact the finished product.”

However, not everyone necessarily agrees with what he has to say about the matter.

Professional videographer and director Stronz Vanderploeg has uploaded a video response to Linus’ video. He discusses how YouTube handles various bitrates and what workflow may work as a better option for you:

So in response to Linus’ question: “Yes. Yes, it is,” writes Vanderploeg.
