BitTorrent is an industry leading protocol for peer-to-peer filing sharing over the Internet, enabling people to quickly share files when needed. Today, the company announced a new photo and video sharing application, BitTorrent Shoot. Designed to allow fast exchange between many different mobile device platforms, BitTorrent Shoot is available in Google Play, Apple’s App Store, and the Windows Phone Marketplace.
The differentiating feature for BitTorrent Shoot is its cross-platform support. BitTorrent Sync’s Vice-President of Product Management explained: “If you’ve ever experienced a situation where you’re on iOS and a friend next to you has an Android phone, sending something like a big batch of photos or a long video is a challenge.” The application, which uses the company’s ‘sync technology’, can quickly send large files to multiple devices without needing to be on the same WiFi network.
If you have ever had a collection of photographs that you wanted to share with friends, then BitTorrent’s Shoot app may be a viable option for fast transfers. There is no limit to the number or size of files you can send, so feel free to zap your friend your entire collection of high resolution photos that you happen to have stored on your mobile device.
Highlights aside, BitTorrent Shoot will be coming at a cost. If you are looking to simply receive files from others, then you won’t be incurring a charge. However, users looking to send photos and video will have to purchase the app for $2. Three transfers can be initiated for free, but after that, you will be asked to buy the application.
BitTorrent Shoot promises fast and secure cross-platform sharing between devices, but the $2 price-tag may stand in their way. Sure, the cost may not be much, but in a world where there are quite a few free alternatives, it may be a hard sell.
