Stunning Video of Paris Captured Through the Viewfinder of an Old Pentax 67

If this video doesn’t make you want to go out and buy a Pentax 67, nothing will. Paris is beautiful enough as-is, but there’s something about exploring it through the viewfinder of a classic medium format camera that will tug at your photographic heartstrings and have you nostalgic for the good ol’ days.

Created by photography and filmmaking enthusiasts Mathieu Maury and Antoine Pai of production/advertising company Maison Carnot, Paris Through Pentax was the result of serendipity.

“It’s actually quite a funny story,” Pai told us in an email. “Mathieu passed by my place with the Pentax 67 and almost the same day I received the Blackmagic pocket camera and it just seemed obvious to us when the two cameras were lying together on the table.”

From there on it was just a matter of figuring out how to rig the two together. A teensy bit of DIY experimentation and they came up with this:

photo

Add a black paper-covered board to help with reflections, and you arrive at the final rig:

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

“As Parisians, we are so used to the charm of our city that we forget sometimes to take a minute and observe,” explains Pai. “Marcel Proust once said, ‘Mystery is not about traveling to new places but it’s about looking with new eyes.’ That is totally what we felt while shooting this film.”

Whether you’ve been to Paris many times or the only exposure you’ve ever had to the city is the myriad photographs you’ve seen of the Eiffel Tower, this video has something for you. And seeing as it’s shot entirely through the viewfinder of a gorgeous medium format camera like the Pentax 67, anybody with a thing for photography should already be sold.

Check it out for yourself above, and then be sure to visit the Maison Carnot website, Facebook and Twitter to see more of Pai and Maury’s work

Nice video, and I’m all for analog! But carry that baby around all day, and you’re gonna start to notice Paris a lot less for the pain in your shoulder…

  • Aezreth

The Pentax 67 is a great camera with fantastic lenses, but is really made to be used with a prism finder. If you want a medium format camera with a waist level finder there are many better choices out there that don’t limit you to horizontal framing.

But the video isn’t stunning … not even close. It’s just kinda normal looking, only the hands holding the camera are very distracting.

  • Ralph Hightower

I want a Mamiya RZ67, but I doubt my wife would let me invest in another system having Canon FD lenses and needing to build my Canon EF lens inventory. Still, I would like to get the Mamiya 645 and RZ67, and also shoot 4×5,

  • docholliday666

I’ll stick with my ‘classic’ Hasselblad 203FE and 110/2 T* FE

  • docholliday666

I loved my RZ, but the square ended up winning after switching to Hasselblad. Yet, nothing is as satisfying as shooting with my 4×5 or 8×10 Deardorf’s. There’s something about taking the time to really enjoy the shot process! Get the RZ and a 75 W shift…that was the most fun on that body!

  • Sheong Josiah Kim

Loved it! Wish my camera had a viewfinder that large! Love seeing people trying new/different things.

Produced one of my favourite bodies of work on 67 and a box or several of Record Rapid. Great camera, even if the shutter goes with a whack.

I have an RZ with 6 lenses if you’re interested. 2 backs and prism finder along with waist level finder :)

  • oscar

I wonder if the Pentax 67, does not invert the images?

  • Rhetorikol

Nice approach, feels like a promo.

  • ksporry

Not sure why a black board is needed for reflections. I can imagine that the viewfinder needed to be shielded from false light. Anyway, it’s an interesting concept. shooting film through a medium format is something i’ve not yet seen before. However, the concept of shooting through a medium format camera’s waist finder is not a novel concept.

Seeing how the author talks about being inspired to buy one in the first sentence of the article, I think my attempt to give some advice to anyone that might feel that way pretty ON-point. I was just trying to be helpful, no need for your derogatory comment.

  • Benny

It inverts them laterally (side to side).

  • Aezreth

It’s really not heavier than a pro DSLR. I used to own two of them and sure, it’s not something you walk around with around your neck all day, but having it in a shoulder bag is no problem. I took some awesome photos with those cameras.

  • NDT001

haha, yeah…. I think you missed the point of the video, and i don’t think it was to stylistically showcase the short fallings of the 67..

  • Aezreth

I never said it was the point of the video, I was just giving advice to whomever might see the video and feel inspired to buy a camera with a waist level finder, since they are pretty awesome to work with. I don’t understand why you feel the need to be so patronizing about it.

  • oscar

Thanks, too much use of my prisms

  • Lithedreamer

Did you have some suggestions for old medium formats that would be better to shoot with? I like my Pentax glass (though none of it would be compatible).

Sure, anything that is either 6×6 or allows you to rotate the back. For example Hasselblad, Mamiya rb67/rz67, Bronica or TLRs like Rolleiflex and Yashica.

  • Edgar Allan Bro

The impressive part is that she managed to walk around with a pentax 67 all day.

  • Edgar Allan Bro

Nothing classic about shooting a focal plane Hassy.

  • Craig Ashley Russell

Brilliant idea. I”m going to bring my Mamiya RB67 back to life with this set up.

  • docholliday666

You’ve obviously never owned one. Try it sometime, with a 40CFE IF and using the internal metering as a walkaround, vacation camera.

  • bagieta

That is how Paris should be. That is how it is in my imagination, but each time I visit this city it seems that reality isnt so perfect.

  • Edgar Allan Bro

Whether I’ve owned one or not is irrelevant. A ‘classic’ Hasselblad is a 500 series.

Also, I have a walkaround vacation camera. A gf670. It fits in my pocket, unlike a cube.

  • fare52h5qpmqaqg5mzwr

looks like you can shoot your own video your way!

i’d love to do it too

  • docholliday666

Actually, it is quite relevant. Considering 1) I do have a 503CW, 2) a 200 series is really a 500 series with an added focal plane and metering – you can still shoot central shutter lenses, and 3) it is related, as I’ve also owned a P67 – which sucked. BTW, what does your gf670 and “cube-shaped brick” comment have to do with a P67 article?

  • Edgar Allan Bro

How is ‘HAY GUYS I HAVE A HASSELBLAD’ relevant to a story about someone shooting a video of Paris through a viewfinder? It isn’t. It was a weak attempt at a gear brag, except no one cares.

And the gf670 comment was a direct response to your condescending suggestion that I should ‘try it sometime’ as a ‘walkaround/vacation’ camera. Hence, relevant.

Now, please resume listing your Zeiss lenses and any Leicas you may own, so we can all be totally impressed by your purchases of goods and services.

  • docholliday666

Since you are still missing the point of the original post, I’ll just hand you the stick and let you run with it. Meanwhile, I’ll go shooting some video with a GoPro taped to the top of my WLF.

  • docholliday666

Hey look, the perfect configuration…to swing around and toss like a brick on a string! Why do people still use the CrapRapid strap? That tripod socket would be better served with a plate on it and used on a tripod.

  • J.C. Overgaard

“CrapRapid”? Really? I see that we’re not a particularly intelligent little soul. Or an observant one. That’s not a BlackRapid strap. It’s a Carry Speed, and it appears to be connected to a ReallyRightStuff tripod plate.

  • docholliday666

Same thing, different name…a turd’s a turd no matter how you polish it.

  • http://www.mindthemix.com Federico Montemurro

Thanks for your useless comment and I greatly appreciate you wasted your time with my post.
