The company is at it again, and this time you have until August 15th to grab a quality piece of film emulation software for the price of ‘on the house.’

This offer is good for the Essential Edition, and to give you an idea on savings, that same version of FilmPack 4 will normally run you $80.

If you use Lighroom 5, it’s not compatible as a plugin (DxO filmpack 3 was discontinued before Lightroom 5 came out). You’ll have to set it up as an external edit program; the same way you can export a .tiff to photoshop to work on it and then go back to Lightroom. Not worth the effort of downloading, installing etc.

i’ve fiddled with the VSCO emulations, but have to admit i don’t really ‘get’ all the emulation craze.
using an app to filter camera phone snaps? sure.
color renderings are typically pretty terrible, and tones less than great.

but with a modern DSLR, i don’t see the attraction to these dramatic filters.
if i’m going for a visual effect, i’ll take the time to develop a specific preset for a shoot.
this way i also learn how to fiddle with HSL and camera color calibration to get just what i want.

i’ve tried just about every VSCO preset for LR and they are almost all WAY too ‘heavy.’
and holy crap! there are 19 different variations for just the Fuji FP-100 preset!

Will Mederski Check the rest of the presets. When you install VSCO it also comes with Standard presets which are less “heavy”. There is also the toolkit where you can or remove things such as the grain, fade, etc. Lastly remember that presets aren’t meant for you to apply and leave as is. Presets are a starting point, tweak it! Hope that helps!

    Thanks for the heads-up.

    yeah. i have multiple kits.

and that’s just it, they DON’T rely on you the user to tweak the presets.

instead they include more than a dozen variations of each preset.
    just for Polaroid 690: -, –, +, ++, +++, Cold, Cold-, Cold–, Cold+, Cold++, Warm, Warm-, Warm–, Warm+, Warm++,

and that’s just for the Nikon Professional Kit!
there’s also the Canon, Fuji AND Standard collection with each of those same presets, ostensibly “artistically fine tuned” based on those different manufacturers…

    i’ve done comparisons. insignificant difference.
    overkill.

@willmederski:disqus I hear you, but I rarely pay attention to those +’s and -‘s. I pick any preset from the standard to the “full strength” versions and tweak on my own. Those toolkits have actually taught me how to do things like fade, etc. I made the mistake and installed for all of the manufacturers and learned afterwards that that was actually dumb of me. I am a Fuji owner so that was the only profile I should have installed. To each his own though, some do find it (and presets in general) to be a waste of time while others find them life savers. Do you :) I actually downloaded dxo last year when they had that first give away and i really didn’t appreciate it at all. There are other options like Red leaf and Rebelsauce as well which are cheaper.

I just can’t activate the product, when I type in the activation code, a message pops up stating the following: “the conection to our server failed. Please check your internet connection,or try again later” but there is no problem whatsoever with the internet conection, I have tried to activate the product unseuccesfully for two days in a row, has this happened to anyone else? any clues on what might be the problem?
