It’s Not Just Phones: Tablets Are Trying to Replace Compact Cameras As Well

Guess what camera was used to shoot the photograph above? A tablet computer. It was shot using the new ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime tablet, which features a camera with a 8-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor, an f/2.4 autofocus lens, an LED flash, and 1080p HD video recording. Looks like we’ll soon be seeing a lot more people whip out tablets for everyday snapshots.

Here are some more sample photos:

I’m loving the competition as the bar is constantly raised. It’s great for all of us :)

…While I appreciate companies like to shoehorn cameras everywhere they can, some mobile phones are hard enough to take a photo with. A tablet is just stupid, i mean holding it to take a photo would hardly be comfortable…

i would say that a tablate is almost like large format camara for that matter, but the results are way worse

Seriously annoys me. Last week at a HS football game I saw someone recording a video of it with an iPad. It looks ridiculous.

    NO.

Have you seen anyone take pictures with a tablet? It looks completely daft,

yep! Took a group self portrait with an iPad, felt like a fool doing it!!! Never again. But if there was nothing else and the photo had to be taken, then I’d use what ever I had handy.

While companies can show impressive images with their tablet devices this will not replace a smartphone as the point-and-shoot. The convenience of having a smartphone with the built in camera is that the device is always on the user and the user base for point-and-shoot wants convenience over features. Even if the user has a smartphone and a tablet the phone is in their pocket for a quick shot.  and the tablet would need to be taken out of a bag, booted, and setup.

I believe that the natural progression of tablet devices in photography will be by the pro-sumer level who will use the tablet to fine tune settings on what they consider a “real” camera

When a tablet or phone will give me these same results from a standing position 5 ft. away, it might replace… Nah, it will likely never happen.
