When Protecting Your Lens Goes Too Far

How far can you go in protecting your gear before people start thinking you have serious issues? We’re not exactly sure, but the guy in the photo above probably crossed that line quite a few filters ago. Thankfully (or sadly, depending on how you see it) the guy isn’t actually an uber-paranoid photographer, but just someone from the BorrowLenses team having a little fun.

Here’s a closeup view of the filter stackage:

If you’re wondering what a photo taken with the setup looks like, the answer is that it’s heavily vignetted:

Did you expect better or worse image quality from a stack of 19 filters?

Disclosure: BorrowLenses is a sponsor of this blog, but we came across this story on Reddit first

i think those 19 filters probably costs as much as the lens itself

Going from just the first picture, I thought it was two lenses stacked like a certain kind of macro rig. Aside from the vignetting, the picture looked pretty clear. Each piece of glass carries a penalty in some form or another. That thing is a stacking of 20 filters on a lens that already has maybe 10 inside it. Those 20 filters are parallel too, which could result in certain parallel mirror type effects.

    That’s exactly what I thought;)

I thought it was a lens hood made out of old filter rings with no glass…although it’s about a dozen rings too long.
