Bigger things may be coming to Sony's popular RX compact camera line, sensor-wise. A new report says that Sony is field testing a new RX camera that packs a significantly larger sensor -- possibly a Four Thirds format one -- that would put it in direct competition with cameras like the Panasonic LX100.
DPReview recently got a chance to put the $900 Panasonic Lumix LX100 through a thorough review, and after putting it through the wringer, the camera has come out victorious... like really victorious. In fact, it received the highest ever award in its class.
One of the most exciting things about capturing high resolution video with the Panasonic LX100 is the ability to extract high resolution still photos from it. Video grabbing is not a new thing, but in standard definition you were looking at stills measuring a third of a Megapixel, and even in Full HD you'd only enjoy 2 Megapixels. But with 4k video you can make 8 Megapixel grabs which is much more useful.
In the ongoing effort to provide the biggest punch in the smallest package, Panasonic has just announced the LX100. Considerably the most sophisticated compact camera Panasonic has ever created, the LX100 looks to set itself apart from the competition with a Micro Four Thirds (MFT) sensor, a Leica-branded lens and 4K video capabilities.
