In the world of social media, it is unfortunately easy to take everything for granted, including the technical and logistical difficulties of making quality photos in the middle of the jungle or in remote villages.
In New Zealand, there's a species of glowworm called Arachnocampa luminosa -- commonly known as the New Zealand glowworm -- that can be found in dark, wet caves. Photographer Joseph Michael made these insects the subject of a series of photos titled "Luminosity."
The filmmakers behind this video claim that it's the "first documented drone flight inside an ice cave." We're not 100% certain of that, but it does certainly offer a spectacular look at one of the side effects of a melting glacier.
If there is only one way for me to describe Iceland, it would be “Monumental Scale Shock”. The country really borders on the extreme. The entire country’s population of 320,137 (as of 2012) is less than one half of Boston’s and two-thirds of everyone lives in the capital, Reykjavik. It's north of NYC by almost all of Canada, but it is warmer by about ten degrees in the winter. And 85% of the country is on renewable energy (Volcanic and Water) as compared to the 13.2% for the US.
Los Angeles-based photographer Brice Bischoff has a project titled Bronson Caves. Between 2009 and 2010, Bischoff visited the caves in Los Angeles' Griffith Park with his 4x5 large format camera and some very large sheets of colored paper. He then used long exposure times to paint colorful blurs into the photographs by waving the papers around.
