AP Stylebook Was Asked to Ban ‘Hallucinate’ When Referring to AI Mistakes

When AI gets something wrong, or just makes something up, it is often referred to as a “hallucination.” Well, not everyone agrees with that term. AP was asked on Bluesky to ban it, in part because, “the term ‘hallucinate’ is an inaccurate, industry-friendly term that should be banned when reporting news about AI fabrications.”

Fair point. Although AP doesn’t seem like it will be changing its stance just yet, it does seem open to the conversation and may revisit it in the future.
