Reviewer Consensus

Strong

The Sony a58 is a capable entry-level DSLR that provides high-resolution images and reliable autofocus performance in a comfortable, lightweight body. Although it offers excellent value for money and effective in-camera processing, some users may find the build quality and screen specifications to be a step backward from previous models.

In fact, we believe the A58 produces arguably the best straight-from-the-camera photos across the board — including in low light, high ISO situations — of any entry-level DSLR we’ve tested to date.

In a tough sector, having a unique selling point is key, and that is what has made Sony’s series of SLTs stand out from the crowd. But with the Alpha 58, its advantages have been diluted quite a bit.

The Sony Alpha A58 continues to stack up well to its competition. If you’re not wedded to either Canon or Nikon and their lens selection, and don’t mind the complexity of deep menus, the A58 is a great value and a camera that can grow with you creatively.

[...] I'd still highly recommend this camera mainly because of the technologies that Sony implemented to their cameras such as a high resolution EVF, fast burst rates for action shots, and continuous autofocus in stills and videos.

Know what it is you're taking a photograph of, so if you're just starting out or if you just want to use this as a point and shoot camera and get really good quality photos, that ability to adjust settings dynamically in the auto mode actually works out very well.

If you're looking for something that's a bit more up to date in terms of the sensor performance, or perhaps you do a bit of video now and then, this would be a pretty good option.
