Viltrox has announced the new AF 35mm f/1.4 Pro lens for full-frame Sony E-mount and Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras. It promises a professional-grade build, high-end image quality, and reliable performance.

The Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.4 Pro joins a pair of other full-frame “Pro” lenses in Viltrox’s lineup, the AF 50mm f/1.4 Pro and the AF 85mm f/1.4 Pro. PetaPixel reviewed the 50mm f/1.4 Pro lens just over a year ago, lauding the lens for its excellent build quality, clean bokeh, and smooth autofocus performance.

With its relatively wider focal length, the new AF 35mm f/1.4 Pro lens should be better-suited to things like landscape, travel, and street photography than its longer siblings, all else equal.

The lens includes 16 glass elements arranged across 11 groups, promising edge-to-edge sharpness and clean image quality. Viltrox notes that the lens includes a pair of Ultra-Precision Aspherical (UA) elements to reduce “onion-ring” bokeh; three ED elements to correct for axial chromatic aberration and reduce color fringing; and four HR elements to ensure good optical quality without using big, heavy glass elements. It has an 11-bladed aperture diaphragm.

Viltrox’s HyperVCM Fast Focus system provides autofocus, and the company says the lens minimizes focus breathing, making it well-suited to video applications. The lens focuses as close as 0.3 meters (0.98 feet) and delivers a maximum magnification of 0.18x, which is respectable for a lens like this. It matches the reproduction ratio of Nikon’s Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.4 lens and Sony’s FE 35mm f/1.4 GM.

The Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.4 Pro lens features a weather-sealed construction and a scratch- and wear-resistant matte black finish. Rubber seals protect against dust, splashes, and moisture.

The lens weighs 760 grams (26.8 ounces) in E-mount and 780 grams (27.5 ounces) in Z-mount. The E-mount version is 111 millimeters (4.37 inches) long, while the Z-mount one is 112.5 millimeters (4.43 inches) long. Both versions accept 77mm front filters.

Viltrox’s new AF 35mm f/1.4 Pro is much heavier than the Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.4 lens. Nikon’s first-party offering weighs just 415 grams (14.7 ounces) and takes 62mm filters. Sony’s FE 35mm f/1.4 GM weighs 524 grams (18.5 ounces). It is 96 millimeters (3.8 inches) long and takes 67mm filters. So Viltrox’s new lens is definitely the biggest and heaviest of the bunch.

Viltrox describes its new AF 35mm f/1.4 Pro lens as the final piece of its Pro Series f/1.4 trio. The company says the three lenses form a cohesive system, and the full set costs under $2,000.
