Instagram Users Can Now Share 20 Photos in a Post

Instagram now lets users share up to 20 photos and videos in a single post.

On Thursday, Instagram announced that is expanding the number of photos and videos that can be added to a single grid post.

Instagram is rolling out the ability for users to add up to 20 photos or videos to their feed carousels.

In 2017, Instagram added the ability for users to post up to 10 photos or videos in one carousel post — something which became informally known as a “photo dump.”

This announcement means that Instagram has doubled the number of photos and videos users can share in a carousel post.

The updated 20 photos and videos limit was rolled out globally to all Instagram users yesterday.

Last year, Instagram introduced new features allowing users to add music to their photo carousels and collaborate with up to three people as co-authors on a post or Reel.

As The Verge notes the change brings Instagram closer to TikTok’s carousel feature, which enables users to include up to 35 photos in a single post.

While TikTok initially gained popularity as a short-form video app, photos have rapidly gained traction too.

TikTok users now create memes and trends using photos instead of videos and tell long stories through multiple images or slides. This approach hasn’t been widely adopted on Instagram yet, but increasing the number of photos and videos on a carousel might encourage users to engage with images in a similar way to TikTok.

Instagram’s latest announcement comes one day after the photo app revealed that it making “views” the primary metric across all of its formats, including reels, photos, carousels and Stories.

Instagram says that it will be introducing “views” as the primary metric in the coming weeks and the update will help creators better understand how their content is performing, regardless of format.

Instagram appears to be encouraging creators to re-focus on reach with “views” instead of the traditional metric of followers and likes with content.
