Ahead of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show next week, lens manufacturer Irix announced the fifth lens in its lineup for cinematographers. The Irix Cine 65mm T1.5 promises excellent performance and versatility for filmmakers of all types.

Irix engineered this new offering with “a blend of traditional lens solutions and cutting-edge innovation,” it says. It’s made from aluminum and magnesium alloy and features weather-sealed construction, making it quite durable. Depending on the mount, the lens weighs around 1446 grams (3.1 pounds). That weight is roughly the same as other Irix lenses, which makes it easier to swap out lenses when using a gimbal. It’s quite compact for a 65mm, making it easier to travel with.

The Irix Cine 65mm T1.5 offers an external diameter of 95mm for barn doors and other accessories and an 86mm filter thread. It uses the company’s front Magnetic Mount System (MMS) for faster filter and accessory changes. Users can also take advantage of the Irix Mate Box IQ. Plus, the geared Mod 0.8 M rings are compatible with most available accessories.

In terms of lens design, it features 11 rounded aperture blades for smooth bokeh with an aperture range of T1.5 to T16. The internal focusing system keeps the lens from changing lengths, making it ideal for gimbal and camera rig use. Additionally, Irix promises minimal focus breathing along with low distortion. Like the rest of the company’s lenses, it features a neutrino coating for consistent color reproduction across the lineup. The engraved markings on the lens are filled with UV-reactive paint, making it easier to see in dim conditions.

The Irix Cine 65mm T1.5 lens is a versatile tool that is compatible with a wide range of camera systems, including Canon EF, Canon RF, Fuji X, L-mount, MFT, Nikon Z, PL-mount, and Sony E mounts. This compatibility ensures that the lens is suitable for cinematographers working with different camera systems, providing them with the flexibility they need. Plus, it’s 8K resolution ready and offers full-frame sensor coverage. The focal length and quality of the lens will work well for a range of genres, including cinematic portraits, narrative filmmaking, documentary filmmaking, commercial use, and music productions.
