OnePlus’ First AI Tool Aims to Take On Google’s Magic Eraser
Although they held out until now, OnePlus is officially joining the AI revolution. The smartphone company’s inaugural AI tool is the AI Eraser, which is a take on Google’s Magic Eraser.
The new AI Eraser tool allows users to remove unwanted objects from photos within the Photo Gallery. To use it, users first must highlight the objects they want removed, such as trash, other people, or imperfections. Then, the AI analyzes the area and automatically creates a replacement background that should blend in completely with the surrounding environment. Paired with the impressive camera found in the OnPlus 12, it should open up new possibilities for mobile creators.
The tool promises to be the same as Adobe’s Generative Fill or Google’s Magic Eraser. While it does the same thing, the AI Eraser tool is based on a proprietary LLM, which “has been trained on a vast dataset that allows it to comprehend complex scenes,” explains OnePlus.
The new tool will be rolled out gradually to OnePlus devices starting in April. Compatible devices include the OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R, OnePlus 11, OnePlus Open, and OnePlus Nord CE 4.
“The development of AI Eraser closely follows OnePlus’ user-centric design philosophy, which places a premium on the value of real user applications,” OnePlus says in its press release. “By eliminating the need for complex manual editing or the use of dedicated photo editing software, AI Eraser makes image editing accessible to all users regardless of previous photo editing experience.”
Though it may be the first AI feature for OnePlus phones, it won’t be the last. “We believe that the potential for generative AI on mobile devices is enormous, with the power to completely transform productivity and creativity,” says Kinder Liu, President and COO of OnePlus. Liu teased more AI features coming throughout the year, though offered no specifics.
“Greater convenience and efficiency driven by the fusion of AI and smartphones will empower people to spend more time doing the things they love,” said Nicole Zhang, General Manager of AI Products at OnePlus. “All OnePlus AI features are built from genuine user needs, and we will continue to invest heavily in developing more revolutionary AI-based features that move us closer to our vision for a more convenient future for all.”
