Leica has announced a limited, special edition Q2 camera in collaboration with The Walt Disney Corporation that pays homage to Walt Disney himself, who 100 years ago began his journey in animated filmmaking.
“To mark the anniversary of the film studios, Disney and Leica are now unveiling the closely guarded secret of their groundbreaking collaboration the special limited edition Leica Q2 Disney ‘100 Years of Wonder,'” Leica says.
Leica adds that Disney changed the techniques of animated filmmaking using Leica equipment from the time with such a lasting effect that the term “Leica Reel” was coined during this period; a Leica Reel is made from animated stills run on 35mm film projectors. Leica says that in this advanced process, the preliminary artwork is aligned with a soundtrack using combined techniques to get a very precise sense of the pace of a sequence.
The camera, which is limited to just 500 total units worldwide, is covered with a special material that Leica says resembles the tracing paper on which Disney’s creators penciled scenes and characters. The actual design printed on it dates back to a model sheet created in 1937 by one of Walt Disney Studio’s animators, Don Towsley.
“The Leica Q2 Disney ‘100 Years of Wonder’ reveals an evocative imagination right at first glance: it is adorned with a very special material reminiscent of the tracing paper on which Disney’s creators penciled scenes and characters, which not only gives the camera a sophisticated aesthetic but also makes it even more interesting for amateur collectors,” Leica adds.
In addition, the top plate of the camera features a print of Mickey Mouse above the viewfinder. The camera ships with a protective dust bag emblazoned with original Disney graphics as well as a branded cotton strap. Finally, the Disney Logo and the edition number are engraved under the back display glass.
As mentioned, the Leica Q2 Disney “100 Years of Wonder” camera, strap, and bag are limited to 500 sets worldwide and will be available only through Leica Stores and Boutiques as well as the Leica Online Store starting on April 27, 2023. The camera will be priced at $5,995.
