The Viiu Rota-Strap is a new take on the camera strap that is not only highly resistant to “slash and grab” style theft, but the creator has also designed multiple additional functions that make it one of the more versatile options on the market.
Viiu is a new camera accessory brand based out of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Its Rota-Strap and associated Rota-Lock accessories are what it calls a sleek, sturdy, and safe way to carry cameras and camera equipment. One of the main features is the material Viiu chose for the strap itself: Dyneema fiber.
According to the company, Dyneema fiber is one of the strongest materials in the world and has a tensile strength that is 15 times greater than that of steel, effectively making it immune to “slash and grab” style theft. Additionally, it’s UV protected and what the company says is exceptionally lightweight.
The strap itself is sturdy, but so are the connection points which are made of 7075 aluminum alloy, the same material used in aircraft construction. That connector is one of the strap’s other main selling points. It attaches to a camera using a cow hitch knot, and the ball and socket rope connector attaches with a 360-degree rotatable piece which keeps the strap from twisting, reduces strap tension, and also keeps the connection to the camera secure.
The strap has additional utility when combined with Viiu’s Rota-Lock accessories, such as transforming the strap into a hand strap in as little as a second.
Those same Rota-Locks can be attached to a backpack, which moves the force point from a single point behind a wearer’s neck to both shoulders, making the strap a lot more comfortable to wear for longer periods of time.
Viiu is a brand new company and as such, the Rota-Strap and Rota-Lock products are its first overall and first on Kickstarter. Unlike many Kickstarter campaigns, Viiu only has one pledge option. For $48, backers will receive one Rota-Strap and three Rota-Locks when the company ships finished products in September. At the time of publication, the campaign was already fully backed.
The company says that the future retail price for the Rota-Strap will be $69, and the Rota-Lock accessories will be $19 for hand strap attachments, $15 for wrist strap attachments, and $30 for backpack attachments. More photos of the strap as well as the full information on the backing option can be seen on the company’s Kickstarter.
