Canon Video Confirms the Tiny RF 70-200mm f/2.8L is NOT an Internal Zoom

A video posted by Canon Korea yesterday confirms something that many Canon shooters feared when they saw how small Canon was making the upcoming RF-mount 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens: this lens does not have an internal zooming mechanism.

The video highlights all of Canon’s ‘holy trinity’ f/2.8 zoom lenses—the RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM, RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM, and the announced-but-not-released RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM. At the 0:45 mark, we get our first glimpse of the diminutive Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM in action; more specifically, we see it telescoping out as the photographer zooms in:

While this dashes the hopes of many Canon full-frame mirrorless shooters who hoped that Canon’s optical engineers had managed to work some dark magic in order to make such a small, internally-focusing 70-200, it shouldn’t come as a surprise. When all is said and done, the laws of physics refuse to be ignored.
